Seattle West's Best Pancakes

Seattle West's Best Pancakes

There is no such thing as a perfect pancake in West Seattle, only the right pancake for the right mood. You might need the chaotic comfort of Luna Park’s garage-sale decor, or you might need a sugar-heavy berry pile near the ferry.

The spread runs from Burrito Express, where a pancake is just a flat, sad burrito, to Bebop’s gluten-free waffles that pass as pancakes. I have stood awkwardly holding a plate for this list.

Use it.

Highlights
Friendly, quick service
Dog-friendly outdoor seating
Quirky retro decor
Accommodating to children
Cool table jukeboxes

I walked into Luna Park Cafe and immediately felt like I had stepped into someone's garage sale, but in a good way. The retro decor is loud, cluttered, and strangely comforting. Service was quick and friendly, which matters when you are hungry and mildly irritated by the table jukebox that only plays songs from before I was born. The pancakes were solid, not life-changing, but the dog-friendly outdoor seating and patient staff made the whole thing painless. Kids were accommodated without fuss. I left full and slightly amused. That is enough.

Fluffy waffles, not heavy
Lemon curd perfectly tart
Quick, friendly service
Solid gluten-free options
Limited seating, go weekdays

Bebop Waffle Shop is technically a waffle place, but I am including it because their pancakes are just waffles without the holes, and I do what I want. The waffles were fluffy without being heavy, and the lemon curd was properly tart, which is rare. Service was quick and friendly. They have gluten-free options that do not taste like cardboard, which is a small miracle. The seating is limited, so go on a weekday unless you enjoy standing awkwardly while holding a plate. I stood awkwardly. I still recommend it.

Fun Saturday lunch spot
Trendy plant-filled cafe

Arthur's has a large menu and a relaxing vibe, which is good because you will need time to decide between the many tempting options. The pancakes were tasty, though not the star of the show. The happy hour is worth noting, and Saturday lunch feels like a fun event. The cafe is trendy and plant-filled, which I normally distrust, but the staff was friendly and the food was honest. If you want a pleasant, unhurried meal without the chaos of a typical brunch spot, this works. I left feeling calm, which is rare for me.

Berry bar pancakes creative
Reliable brunch near ferry
Customizable toppings selection
Sugar-heavy but satisfying

Portage Bay Cafe near the ferry is reliable, which is more than I can say for most things in West Seattle. The berry bar lets you pile your pancakes with fresh fruit and other toppings, and the pancakes themselves are creative and satisfying. They are sugar-heavy, so do not come here expecting subtlety. The service was steady and the crowd was the usual brunch mix of ferry passengers and locals. If you are catching a boat, this is a safe bet. I ate too many berries and regretted nothing.

Highlights
Big portions, rotating quiches
Unique menu, healthy comfort mix
Great Alki family brunch spot
Wonderful waitstaff, solid drinks

Harry's Beach House serves big portions, and I mean big. The menu is unique, blending healthy comfort food in a way that should not work but does. The rotating quiches are a nice touch, though I was there for pancakes, and they did not disappoint. The waitstaff was wonderful, and the drinks were solid. It is a great family brunch spot near Alki, so expect noise and sand, but the food holds up. I left heavier than I arrived, which I consider a success.

Fresh-squeezed orange juice

Crispy roasted rosemary potatoes
Kid-friendly, timely service
Full bar with brunch

Uncle Eddie's Public House does a few things very well. The fresh-squeezed orange juice tastes like actual oranges, not concentrate. The homemade biscuits and jam are worth the trip alone. The roasted rosemary potatoes were crispy, which is a texture I appreciate. Service was timely and kid-friendly. They have a full bar, so you can get a mimosa with your pancakes, which is the adult version of balanced breakfast. The pancakes themselves were fine, but the sides stole the show. I went for the pancakes and stayed for the biscuits. No complaints.

Great service, friendly staff
Delicious pub food menu
Free street parking available
Cozy, lively local atmosphere

Circa Grill & Alehouse is a pub, and the pancakes are not the headline, but they are respectable. The service was great, and the staff was friendly despite the lunch rush. The pub food menu is delicious, so if you want pancakes, get them, but do not ignore the burgers. Free street parking is a rare luxury in West Seattle, and the atmosphere is cozy and lively. It is the kind of place where locals gather and the noise level is comfortable. I would return, but probably for the ale and the fries. The pancakes did not offend me.

Breakfast burritos worth the hype
Roasted poblanos and tender steak
Cooked fresh, stuffed to brim
Tastes like authentic New Mexico

Burrito Express is not a pancake place, but their breakfast burritos are worth the hype, and I am reviewing them because a pancake is just a flat, sad burrito. The roasted poblanos and tender steak were cooked fresh and stuffed to the brim. It tasted like authentic New Mexico, which is high praise from someone who has eaten a lot of mediocre breakfast burritos. The tortilla held up, and the flavors were bold. If you want pancakes, go elsewhere. If you want a breakfast that beats any pancake, come here. I will not apologize for this review.

Highlights
Strong coffee, strong service
No-frills southwest diner menu
Tasty food, cramped booths
Classic neighborhood breakfast spot

Hudson is a no-frills southwest diner with strong coffee and strong service. The food is tasty, but the booths are cramped, so do not bring your elbows or your personal space issues. It is a classic neighborhood breakfast spot, the kind of place where the regulars know the staff by name. The pancakes were simple and decent, nothing fancy. The southwest menu adds a little heat if you want it. I sat awkwardly close to my neighbor and still enjoyed my meal. That is the sign of good food.

Highlights
Consistent pancakes, usually enjoyable
Takeout can miss syrup
Open on holidays, appreciated
Service sometimes inattentive
Flavor may underwhelm strict critics

Endolyne Joe's is consistently average, which is not an insult. The pancakes are usually enjoyable, but they will not make you write poetry. The takeout can miss on syrup, so eat in if you can. They are open on holidays, which I appreciate because most places are closed and I need pancakes on Thanksgiving. Service has been inattentive a few times, so bring patience. The flavor may underwhelm strict critics, but it satisfies the basic craving. I went, I ate, I left. It is fine. That is the review.

No brunch wait Saturdays
Free parking, fast coffee
Friendly staff, simple fare
Karaoke with pink grapefruit juice

Chelan Cafe has been around for 88 years, and it shows in the best way. There is no brunch wait on Saturdays, which is practically a miracle in this city. Free parking and fast coffee helped my mood considerably. The staff was friendly, and the fare is simple, which is what you want sometimes. They even have karaoke, and pink grapefruit juice, which is an odd but welcome combination. The pancakes were basic but reliable. Nothing fancy, but I did not need fancy. I needed a seat and a plate. I got both.

Highlights
Large portions, delicious food
Coffee prepared with great care
Popular neighborhood walk-up window
Berry and cream cheese cookies
Oatmeal delicious, worth the wait

The Birdhouse is a walk-up window that has earned its popularity. The portions are large, and the food is delicious. The coffee is prepared with great care, which I appreciate because bad coffee ruins my entire morning. They have berry and cream cheese cookies that are worth ignoring your diet for, and the oatmeal is surprisingly good, but I was there for pancakes. The pancakes were substantial and well-made. The wait was acceptable, given the quality. I would wait again, but I would not be happy about it. Still, worth it.
